| Thallus forming extended patches to 30 cm wide. Lobes attenuate, without lateral contacts, often almost terete especially near centre of thallus, 1–4 mm wide; branching dichotomous. Upper surface esorediate, grey. Medulla thick or solid; lobe cavity narrow or absent. Lower surface strongly wrinkled, fading to pale brown or off-white near apices. Apothecia common, sessile to subpedicellate; receptacle thick, wrinkled, funnel-shaped; disc 5–8 mm wide, concave becoming ±flat or convex, red-brown to brown; thalline exciple entire, ±involute becoming crenate. Ascospores 6–9 × 4.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia shallow, wrinkled, appearing as black dots particularly near lobe apices. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, P± orange. Atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major); 3-hydroxyphysodic acid, 2'-O-methylphysodic acid (minor); alectoronic acid, physodalic acid and protocetraric acid (present or absent). | ||
| Endemic in Australia, common in subalpine and upland areas of south-eastern Qld, N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.; grows on rocks and occasionally on adjacent shrubs and dead wood. | ||
